Official synopsis
Chantal Birman, a liberal midwife and feminist, has devoted her life to defending women's rights. At almost 70 years old, she continues to visit those who have just given birth to provide them with care and advice. Between painful moments and intense joys, her visits offer a rare portrait of the thorny moment when mothers return home.
The programmer’s eye
A gripping postpartum documentary, “Sheroes” is built as a discussion between two midwives, one who is just starting out and another one who is about to retire. At the core of that transmission process, irrigated by the notion of sorority, there’s the possibility of cinema as a space for discussion and attention to others. Moments that are still little seen on the big screen stand out. Far from any grandiloquent theorizing, pragmatic feminism is deployed, one that is close to and attentive to the female bodies which have just given life its first impetus. The intimate sphere has never been so political. — Natacha Seweryn
