Official synopsis

Myriam, an orphan, learns that she will be moved to another foster family. She’s often mocked for her naivety, but this ingenuousness allows her to see what others can’t see: talking animals or even benevolent witches guarding the forest overlooking the city. Only she could believe in the fate of young Bilal, who, he says, will join his parents on Mars. For them both, this first day of summer will be the last day they will live in the realm of their childhood.

The programmer’s eye

For more than ten years, Thomas Bardinet has been leading the Floirac DIY film workshop. “The Witch and the Martian” is the result of all the work he has done with young people from Floirac. In this moving film, everyone's words have their place; it is full of inventiveness and as fresh as morning dew. Through the prism of fiction and magic, the problems that affect all teenagers, the lack of reference points and legitimacy, and all the sudden and misunderstood upheavals that go through them are thus outlined.

Biography and Filmography

After training at the Fémis, Thomas Bardinet worked as an editor on films by Dominik Moll, Gilles Marchand, Laurent Cantet and Vincent Dietschy, while making short films and his first feature, “Le Cri de Tarzan” (1995). He’s also an editor and a musician for his own films. For the past 10 years, he has run the Atelier de Bricolage Cinématographique de Floirac, where he developed “The Witch and the Martian” (2021), his fifth feature film.
