Kyoto in the 18th century. Osan, wife of the great printer of the Imperial Palace, asks Mohei, her husband's favorite employee, for a loan to help her family. Mohei, who secretly loves Osan, wants to use the seal of the printer to get the money. His fraudulent scheme is discovered, Mohei confesses to his boss. But due to a combination of circumstances, Osan is seen with Mohei. Compromised but impeccable, tired of her husband's infidelities, Osan prefers to leave home. Mohei flees with her, and despite their class difference, declares his love.
