Official synopsis
Anne, a very young woman, decides to have an abortion in order to finish her studies and escape the social fate of her proletarian family. The story of France in 1963, of a society that condemns the desire of women, and sex in general. A simple, hard story about someone who decides to take action against the law. Anne has little time; exams are coming up, her belly is getting rounder...
The programmer’s eye
Adapted from Annie Ernaux, “L’Événement” draws a taut line towards this programmatic title. Audrey Diwan imagines a lonely heroine (played by the breathtaking Anamaria Vartolomei) and directs a combat film, the absolute necessity of which embraces us. Abortion hasn’t been shown much on screen, it was about time it confronted it. It is the staging of an act in a traumatic and clandestine era. The directing shows courage and never hides the suffering, yet never gives in to darkness. The film won the Golden Lion in Venice this year.
