Official synopsis
In 1984, Paris is the place all the young people want to be, including the Rascals, youngsters from the suburbs. For Frédérique, a provincial student, the capital city calls for independence and success. Yet, Paris is witnessing the emergence of a new type of organized, politicized and ultra-violent skinhead, the Boneheads. This marks the beginning of the war between the two groups, and the end of innocence for the Rascals and Frédérique.
The programmer’s eye
There are two periods in the “Rascals machine”. The film is armed with the tinsel of the purest fiction - colors from American cinema, Clockwork Orange-style gang lingo, serial writing of the characters, almost caricatural restitution of an era... - and quickly defuses it. By doubling his Brylcreem figures with the violence of 1984 (ratonnades, presence of identitarians in Assas, multiplication of armed militias in Paris…), “The Rascals” demolishes the myth of multicultural France, just like a fantasy around US TV stranded in the Parisian dampness.
