Official synopsis
In Eastern Kentucky, i.e. the poorest region of the United States, on the fringe of society live those pejoratively referred to as "Hillbillies". They are the descendants of what our fictionalized collective imagination identifies as the incarnation of rural America and, by extension, Donald Trump’s main electorate. Through the eyes and words of one of them, Diane Sara Bouzgarrou and Thomas Jenkoe collect precious, lucid and rare thoughts, which stand as the last remnants of a dying community.
Biography and Filmography
In her work, Diane Sara Bouzgarrou explores the breakthrough period experienced by characters haunted by loneliness and withdrawn into themselves. Her latest film, “Je ne me souviens de rien”, was both acclaimed in France and abroad (Cinéma du Réel, Torino Film Festival...).
Through the question of evil and borders (may the latter be mental, moral or social), Thomas Jenkoe tackles the divorce between man and the world in our modern societies. His previous film, “Souvenirs de la Géhenne”, screened at prestigious festivals (Cinéma du Réel - Prix de la Compétition française, IFF Rotterdam...). “The Last Hillbilly” is the couple's first feature film.
